U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the United States is entering the “final stage” of its conflict with Iran. He announced a full-scale financial offensive aimed at cutting off every economic lifeline supporting the Tehran government.

Bessent posted on social media platform X late Sunday (August 23) that the operation would utilize all available U.S. agencies and authorizations to isolate Iran, and warned that countries continuing to support Tehran could face consequences from Washington.

In his post, he said, “President Donald Trump has dismantled Iran’s military capabilities, destroyed nearly 100% of its military facilities, and buried its nuclear program.”

He added, “We are now entering the endgame. At dawn Monday, an economic D-Day will begin—the largest financial offensive ever launched against an adversary.”

These comments are from an article titled “An economic D-Day is coming for Iran,” written by Bessant and published in the Financial Times.

This comes after President Trump announced last week a “devastating” economic operation against Iran, targeting oil smuggling, cash transfers, currency swap arrangements, exchange bureaus, ship registry offices, and shell companies.

Trump posted a brief message on Truth Social on Monday, saying, “Iran is completely collapsing.” This was his assessment of the situation in Iran before the Treasury Department announced its related measures.

“The Islamic Republic has survived by packaging extortion as a guarantee of security,” Bessant said. “It gained power because of a calculation: Iranian retaliation was seen as inevitable, and US law enforcement was seen as something to be bargained for. Under President Trump, that era is over.” He also noted in a message directly to Tehran’s remaining economic partners: “Those who fear the dangers of defying Tehran should not underestimate the cost of testing Washington.”

Bessant wrote in the article: “Any country that acts as the financial lifeline of a declining regime should expect to share in its isolation. To become a haven for terrorism is, in the eyes of the United States, becoming a global outcast.”

Iran condemned the impending US measures and vowed to retaliate. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei warned on Monday against joining the US economic pressure campaign against Iran. Iran threatened to strike at the commercial and oil interests of countries cooperating with US actions.

The United States and Iran reached a provisional peace agreement on June 18, demanding an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the guarantee of safe passage for ships, and the commencement of a 60-day negotiation schedule to end the conflict and resolve Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Under the agreement, the Iranian regime pledged not to seek to acquire or develop nuclear weapons.

Both sides subsequently accused each other of violating the agreement and re-emerged into armed conflict in early July. The conflict was reignited by repeated Iranian attacks on commercial shipping.

Pakistan, one of the countries involved in brokering the provisional agreement, sent its Army Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to Iran on Monday as part of the country’s efforts to “promote regional peace and stability.”

Iran also confirmed that Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi is scheduled to visit Tehran on Tuesday for talks on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran stated that it is negotiating with Oman on the management of the strait.

The United States says oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz continue. Since early May, U.S. Central Command has assisted at least 1,300 commercial vessels carrying more than 600 million barrels of crude oil through the strategically important strait.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military has tightened its blockade of Iranian ports and oil terminals. U.S. Central Command reported that as of Sunday, the U.S. military had diverted 70 commercial vessels, rendered three vessels immobile, and boarded two others for inspection to ensure compliance with the blockade measures.
